Neither goal was seriously threatened until the first twenty-five minute when Ossett opened the scoring, but it served only to spur Leeds into action and they were 3-1 up by half time. In the twenty-ninth minute Andy Ritchie's centre was too hot for the Denaby keeper to handle and the ball went off Keith Edwards and into the net. In the thirty-fifth minute Simon Grayson crossed from the right and Keith Edward's shot was parried by the keeper and from the rebound the striker hit the post but it provided a simple chance for John Buckley to get his name on the scoresheet. In the thirty-eighth minute Russell Doig cross from the right wing was paled away by the Ossett keeper, but only as far as the waiting Andy Ritchie who found Keith Edwards, who scored from close range. Edwards completed his hat-trick two minutes into the second half, with a shot from fifteen yards. Ossett reduced the margin to 4-2 with a goal in the sixty-third minute but Peter Maguire restored the Leeds three goal cushion when he scored with a fierce shotten minutes later. For Leeds, Richard Annan replaced Simon Grayson at Right Half. Richardson replaced Andy Ritchie at Inside Right. Peter Maguire, who replaced Keith Edwards at Centre Forward scored the fifth Leeds goal in the seventy-third minute. Jones was an unused substitute for Leeds.
